CHAIR: Polina Kuzmina - Gymnasium 157

Distinguished participants and guests, I would like to introduce myself.

My name is Polina Kuzmina. I am from one of the most beautiful and attracting cities in the world, which is St-Petersburg, Russia. I am a student of the final year in Gymnasium 157 named by the princess of Oldenburg.

This year GeMUN conference is going to be my 8th UN model, and the 4th as a chair. I’m really honored to participate as a chair of SOCHUM committee. For me MUN is not just an opportunity to develop English skills, knowledge of politics, economic and social situation in the world society. It is also a way to find new friends and see old ones, to make new contact and develop already existing ones and, of course, to have fun and enjoy every moment spent in this amazing cozy city, Genoa.

Make sure that you are well prepared to express your thoughts based on the delegation you represent. Overcome your fears and let us hear your voice! If we want to change the future, we should not just rely on others. We should act by ourselves as well.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you in upcoming February. Moreover I would like to invite each of you to our 21st St. Petersburg Model United Nations, where I’m honored to be a Secretary General.

Best wishes,
Polina Kuzmina

DEPUTY CHAIR: Rakib Sarkar - Liceo Scientifico G.D. Cassini

Honorable Chair, fellow delegates, distinguished guests, essential members of security and staff.

I’m Rakib Sarkar and I’m eighteen years old. I live in Genoa and I’m attending the last year in “Liceo Scientifico G.D. Cassini”.

I’ve started my Genoa Model United Nations (GeMUN) experience five years ago, in 2013, as a delegate and then I was a delegate on two other occasions. MUNs are such beautiful experiences: they allow you to visit new places, meet new people, consolidate one’s own English skills and participate actively in solving our World’s issues.

This year’s GeMUN will be my fourth and last MUN experience, and I will serve for the first time as a Student Officer in an official MUN.

In this year’s GeMUN, I am honored to serve as the Deputy Chair of Social Cultural and Humanitarian Committee (SOCHUM).

I welcome all of you in a such beautiful city as Genoa and I wish that all of you will enjoy this year’s GeMUN conference.

Best Regards,
Rakib Sarkar

I have always been interested in environmental issues, which are crucial in the world we are living in today, so I hope you will take active part in the debate. Also, I am sure we will make it as fruitful and stimulating as ever!

CHAIR: Marco Lomi - Deledda International School

Dear GeMUN participants and guests,

my name is Marco Lomi, I was born in Genoa and I am fifteen years old. I currently attend my second year at Deledda International School and next year I will start the IB diploma program.

Even though this is not my first time chairing, I am as enthusiast and excited as when I first started. In my opinion this should be how a Chair should feel like in every MUN conference.

I believe that Model United Nations is both a thrilling and beautiful experience, not only because you can make new friends at the conference, but also because a MUN can inspire people, open minds, improve public speaking and diplomatic skills. Moreover, one can expand personal and historical knowledge by simply following the debates.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Best Regards,
Marco Lomi

FAO

DIRECTOR GENERAL: Edoardo Bellassai - Istituto Statale Italiano Leonardo da Vinci

Originally, it was simple and “naive” philanthropy that drove me towards the world of politics and economy. Just after the beginning of the global depression in 2008 I was ten years old and I started to feel involved, caring to understand what was happening.

Following networks and newspapers, I searched the reasons behind people’s suffering, and why it seemed so difficult to find a solution. Now, after 9 years, that genuine sentiment has become my passion, a commitment and, hopefully, my future. Along the first three years of high school, I attended a humanistic institute in Rome, based upon the study of both classic and modern literature, history and philosophy, better suited to address my attitudes.

By the end of the third year my family moved to Paris, an opportunity that despite the implied difficulties which inevitably carried with it, I dealt with enthusiasm. I had to change from my original studies to a scientific high school, which implied a series of adaptive steps. It is right in this moment that I started to attend the Model United Nations club of my school, which gave me the chance of participating in important meetings such as PaMUN, GeMUN and IndMUN. During these two years in Paris, I tried to seize every opportunity I could find to become more and more comfortable with the international environment, both in private and on public occasions. With this goal, I started following broadcasts and conferences on geopolitical subjects such as the COP21.

In a nutshell, from a young age I developed a strong interest about all the humanistic subjects and social sciences, wanting to unravel the mechanisms of a global society and guided by an insatiable curiosity for different realities. I got close to journalism and social activism in my own country, while, when I moved to Paris, I discovered how intense debating was, by getting into touch with people from different countries and even continents.

DIRECTOR: Marta Serra - Liceo Linguistico Internazionale Grazia Deledda

My name is Marta Serra.

I am sixteen years old, I am Italian and I live in Genoa. I am currently attending the third year of high school at Liceo Linguistico Internazionale “Grazia Deledda”, where my studies mostly focus on languages as German, English, and Arabic.

It is a great honour to be the President and a Chair of the Food and Agriculture Organization in GeMUN 2017 and to be involved in solving such important issues. Since I was fourteen I have been participating in the MUN world, and I have always been fascinated by how effectively we could, and still can, change things.

I have participated in GeMiniMUN 2014 as a Delegate of Norway, GeMUN 2015 as a Delegate of Cuba in the Environment Commission, GeMiniMUN 2015 as, both disruptive delegate of Croatia and Chair, and finally PaMUN 2015 as a Delegate of Portugal in the Political Committee held in Paris at the “Mutuallite Palace”. Moreover I served as a chair of Disarmament Committee in GeMUN 2016 and again as officer in ToMUN 2016.

I could not be more excited about this year’s GeMUN conference and I hope you are as well. Looking forward to meeting you all soon and wishing you all a fruitful debate!

DEPUTY DIRECTOR: Yael Guglielmino - Liceo Linguistico Internazionale Grazia Deledda

I am deeply convinced that this conference will be an extraordinary opportunity for me to improve myself and to appreciate different ideas, but also to get to know lots of interesting people. I am glad that we will be able to take advantage of these days of conference to grow up as a team.

I would like to wish you all a fruitful debate, always reminding to respect your colleagues in the spirit of MUN conferences.

PRESIDENT: Pavel Chernov - Gymnasium 157

Hello, dear participants of GEMUN!

My name is Pavel Chernov, I am sixteen years old and I am a student of Gymnasium 157, which is in Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

This is a great pleasure for me to be president of ECOSOC in the upcoming conference. I firmly believe that this kind of students’ activities is one of the key factors of establishing bridges between nations and generations and supporting peace and development in the years to come.

I was first introduced to Model United Nations movement in 2015 and hitherto have participated in NOVMUN 2015 as a delegate in Migration committee representing the USA, SPIMUN 2016 as delegate in Security Council representing the United Kingdom, NOVMUN  2016 as a Chair in Extremism committee and Saint-Petersburg Model United Nations representing Pakistan in ECOSOC. Therefore, I understand what actions should be implemented to make the conference a productive and pleasant experience. Nonetheless, nothing can work without decent level of preparation and enthusiasm from the delegates, so I am really looking forward to it.

I am extremely excited to participate in the forthcoming GEMUN and hope that together we can contribute to conference as much as we can.

Best regards,
Pavel Chernov

PRESIDENT: Chiara Garello - Liceo Linguistico Internazionale Grazia Deledda

My name is Chiara Garello and I am a nineteen years old student from Liceo Linguistico Grazia Deledda. My MUN career started in 2015, when I took part in GeMUN 2015, and even if it this was a long time ago, I can still remember how anxious and excited I felt when it started. While introducing myself, I have to say the most culturally fulfilling experience in my life so far has been an exchange program in Australia. I lived in Newcastle and I can still remember every day I spent there, the difficulty I had to improve my English and my integration with the Australian people. I have always been interested in international conflicts and relationships and that is why this summer I decided to be an ecologic volunteer in California, in Santa Cruz.

These experiences helped me grow up, understand how wide our world is and how different we all are, but alike at the same time.

Regards,
Chiara Garello

Distinguished GeMUN participants,

My name is Chiara Traverso, I was born in Genoa and I am seventeen years old. I am currently  attending the fourth year at Liceo Linguistico Internazionale Grazia Deledda and my studies are focused on foreign languages such as English, Spanish and French. I am very proud of taking part in this conference as the President of the Security Council because I think  that improving my skills in managing a debate will be useful for my future job too. I think that the Security Council this year is facing important issues. With my three past experiences in GeMUN and one in THIMUN (The Hague) I have always found delegates very interested and well informed which is one of the most motivating facts. Seeing all these young students involved in formal discussions is just like seeing them going deeply into their work career. The purpose of GeMUN is to make all participants aware of what is going on all around the world but also make new friends, improve the language and have fun, and that is how I live this experience. GeMUN UniLevel 2017 – Student Officers

Advisory Panel on Political and Legal Challenges for Sustainable Development

PRESIDENT: Elisabetta Felici - University of Genoa

My name is Elisabetta Felici, I am 21 years old and I am currently attending the last year of International Politics at the University of Genoa.

I participated at my first MUN in 2009, where I was a GeMUN member of the staff. I then again took part in GeMUN conference as a member of the staff both in 2010 and 2011, while during GeMUN 2012 I was Head of the Press.

My MUN experience as a high school student was not limited to GeMUN: in 2011 I participated to RRSMUN, while in 2012 I participated to GMUN in Doha, Qatar.

During last year’s conference, GeMUN 2016, I had the privilege to cover the role of Deputy Chair for my very first time.

I believe GeMUN was crucial in forming the person that I am today: it taught me to overcome obstacles, no matter how high they were, to believe in myself and that my ideas, the solutions I have in mind will be heard.

I hope your experience in this year’s GeMUN will be as wonderful as you can imagine.

Elisabetta

VICE PRESIDENT: Vittoria Di Giovanni - University of Genoa

My name is Vittoria Di Giovanni, I’m 21 and I am attending International and Diplomatic Sciences at the University of Genoa. I started my MUN experience within my first year of Uni, and I’ve never stopped since then. I strongly believe MUNs can help raise awareness towards global political problems, and can contribute to our growth. Moreover, MUN Conferences push us to deal with other people’s points of view: an incredibly important element in forging witty minds.

For all these reasons I hope your GeUniMUN 2017 Conference will be as challenging and entertaining as possible; but don’t forget to have fun too.
