Dear MUN participants,
The 1st session of the International Court of Justice took place at the GeMUN conference here in Genoa last year.
The ICJ is the main judicial body of the United Nations; its task is to hear and seek to resolve international cases between governments in conflict.
The model ICJ is aimed at students with a particular interest in law, and who demonstrate an aptitude for it, to join together to discuss 2 real pending cases of the International Court of Justice and, through the examination of evidence and exchange of opinion, return a verdict. That is what happened last year, where in all 20 students were involved: president and co-president, register, 10 judges and 8 advocates (two parties for each case and two advocates for each party ), and this is what I hope will happen in 2012, at the 2nd session of the Genoa Model ICJ.
The GeMUN ICJ this year will be focused on the following cases:
Case 3: Armed Activities in the Territory of the Congo (Democratic Republic of the Congo v. Uganda)
Since the whole GeMUN 2012 conference is based on youth issues, it is necessary to focus on the young soldiers and civilians of both nations involved in this military territory dispute, and to find a pertinent solution to it, in order to guarantee the country peace and protection.
Case 14: Certain Activities carried out by Nicaragua in the Border Area (Costa Rica v. Nicaragua)
Given that the government of Nicaragua has been carrying out activities related to dredging works in the border area since 2010, and, 2 years on from the beginning of the dispute, the court still has not arrived at a conclusion, it is urged to intervene and to finally issue a valid verdict.
I would like to thank Camilla Torresan and Davide Antoni, members of the GeMUN ICJ Board, our Secretary General Dario Panada, Under Secretary General Alice Cotogno, our MUN Director Dina Kotelnikova, who have supported and helped in the organization of this new outstanding branch of GeMUN conference.
For any doubts or questions about the ICJ in Genoa, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I am looking forward to meeting you here, in Genoa, in order to work together for the same goal.
Yours sincerely,
Elisa Izzotti,GeMUN ICJ Board
